60 editions of Festival of Merida

The first performing arts festivals in Spain, as currently understood, has its germ in the mutation of some prominent art events in periodic and permanent structures. So it was the case of Festival of Mérida. In 1933, he staged the play Medea by Seneca (version of Miguel de Unamuno) played by actress Margarida Xirguat the Teatro Romano de Mérida (Extremadura). In 1934, a second edition will be held but then this artistic event will be suspended for 19 years by the political tensions that lived in Spain. In 1953 the activity is resumed with the piece Phaedra in charge of a university theater company by introducing the Merida Festival. This year 2014, therefore, celebrates its 60th edition.
